Hello from Privitar,
It has been another eventful few weeks with sensitive data privacy issues making the headlines.
The UK’s Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, announced that she would like to make genomic testing part of standard NHS care, driving debate with respect to data privacy in relation to this highly sensitive data set. Whilst in the same week, the Information Commisioner's Office (ICO) found that the Royal Free Hospital breached the Data Protection Act when it provided patient record data to artificial intelligence company, DeepMind. The recurring theme is the rising desire to unlock the value from data and the inherent conflict with data privacy.
Our latest research, in partnership with Finextra, found that 81 percent of organisations believe they could improve insights if data privacy was protected by technological controls. Cameron Craig, Group Head of Data Privacy at HSBC agreed, "further embedding privacy into the project lifecycle can actually enable us to do things with data that we’d otherwise not be able to do for both our benefit, and the customer’s benefit." Read the full report below.
Now, with less than one year to go until the GDPR deadline of 25 May 2018, a recent poll by Computer Weekly suggested that nearly a quarter of companies in the UK and US don’t expect to be ready in time. At Privitar, we're seeing companies at various stages of preparation and most companies will face the challenge of how to prioritise compliance efforts. In this update, we have included our recommendations to help direct efforts.
We were delighted to see Privitar named in the prestigious FinTech 50 last month. A showcase of the top 50 European FinTech firms, doing the most to transform the financial services industry. The list was selected by some of the most influential people in FinTech, and whittled down from 1,500 candidates. You can view the full list here.
In case you missed it, you can also hear Privitar CEO, Jason du Preez, talk 'the Science, Art and Regulation of Data Privacy’ in the latest London FinTech Podcast here.
Best wishes
Nikki Stones Head of Marketing, Privitar
